This paper is concerned with the estimation of energy use in office buildings in Malaysia and with the energy use of major equipment. Energy intensity (EI) – a measure of a building's energy ...performance – is estimated for Malaysia and compared with a number of selected countries. Air conditioners are shown to be the major energy users (57%) in office buildings, followed by lighting (19%), lifts and pumps (18%) and other equipment (6%). It is estimated that 77,569
MWh of energy can be saved and a huge reduction of emissions achieved through the application of advance glazing, compact fluorescent lamps (CFL), insulation, housekeeping, and by raising thermostat set point temperature of air conditioners, and reducing EI.
It is also estimated that a very substantial amount of energy can be saved by making use of energy-efficient motors in building systems with different motor loading percentages.
Finally, it can be shown that the use of variable speed drives (VSDs) and energy-efficient motors leads to substantial energy savings and an enormous reduction in emissions.
The concept of work-life balance appears to be highly promising when it comes to improving the balance between professional and private life, and promoting a more gender-neutral way of framing this issue. The article investigates the question of how this demand for gender-neutrality presents itself in the academic field, which is traditionally characterised by a blurring of the boundaries between work and life. Based on a qualitative-empirical study at an Austrian university we argue that the assumption of incompatibility between academia and family life has become a gendered and excluding discourse in the fi eld: Work-life balance is reduced to balancing childcare and a career and this is primarily assigned to women, who are then denied the status of fully dedicated academics. // ABSTRACT IN ENGLISH: The following paper is concerned with the idea of `Coworking Spaces'. This is a new concept of very flexible leasing of desks in an office space which has spread widely in the last few years. The idea of Coworking is based on a `culture of sharing': not only office space is shared, but also knowledge and ideas with other people from heterogeneous backgrounds and professions. The article focusses on self-employed people who are the main users of Coworking and who work in very dynamic labour markets, especially in digital-based segments of the creative industries. With reference to the theory of structuration (Giddens 1988) and concepts of personal knowledge networks (Grabber/Ibert 2006, Wittel 2001). Coworking Spaces are described as `market places' for networking practices and as a new form of contextualization of working situations. The results presented in this paper are based on a participatory observation and qualitative interviews. Abstract printed by permission of Franz Steiner Verlag, Stuttgart, Germany
The report investigates the characteristics of workplace wellness programs, their prevalence and impact on employee health and medical cost, facilitators of their success, and the role of incentives ...in such programs. The authors employ four data collection and analysis streams: a literature review, a survey of employers, a longitudinal analysis of medical claims and wellness program data from a sample of employers, and five employer case studies.
