  • Grammaticalization of analytic futures in English and French : big data approach = Grammaticalisation des futurs analytiques en anglais et en français : approche des mégadonnées : diplomska naloga
    Kovač, Jana, 1986-
This work deals with analytic futures in the English and French languages from the perspective of grammaticalization studies. Development of future forms is viewed as a conceptually motivated ... process, different stages of which are evident both in diachrony and in synchrony. The work is comprised of a theoretical overview and a description of empirical research. The theoretical overview provides information on cognitive processes involved in development of analytic futures and development of their semantics. Furthermore, it discusses applicability of these findings for classification of both future forms. The empirical research studies the semantic shift of the English verb "to go" and the French verb "aller" from full lexical verbs to auxiliaries. 'Big data' analytics have been used to explore the frequency of use of the lexical and the auxiliary verbs in both languages and to identify the most relevant contexts in which the verbs assume both functions. Results indicate how and when analytic futures developed and the frequency of use in their respective language over time. Semantic analysis of lexical verbs revealed contexts in which interpretation of futurity was intuitive. Typical examples of analytic futures provide insights into how semantically detached the auxiliaries are from their respective lexical verbs and which future semantics is most commonly used over time.
