Theoretical background: Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) have been the most common cause of morbidity and mortality in Europe and in the United States for decades., and they are also increasing in ... developing countries. In the case of cardiac arrest, the mortality rate is very high, although many death cases could be prevented by timely identification and early intervention. The automated external defibrillator is a completely safe device, and it allows users a quick and easy use in providing first aid. However, users mostly have fear using it. Method: The quantitative research method - descriptive method of work was used in the thesis. To carry out the research, we used a non random sample. Research data was obtained through a questionnaire, which was distributed to100 respondents, aged between 18 to 60 years, who are the patients of the Upper Savinja Health Centre. They had to meet a certain criteria listed in the questionnaire. The questionnaire was completed by 85 patients while15 patients refused to participate in the research. Results: The research results show, that all 85 (100 %) respondents, who completed the questionnaire, are familiar with the risk factors of the acute myocardial infarction. 78 (92 %) respondents know the signs, which indicate the acute myocardial infarction (a severe chest pain, which radiates into the neck or into the arm). Only 4 (5 %) respondents know the correct combination of approach to a person who has suffered cardiac arrest. 75 (88 %) respondents are aware of the fact, that the AED is used for rescuing persons who had cardiac arrest. Only 1 respondent (1 %) believes, that he has sufficient knowledge about the use of AED. The rest of the respondents believe that they are not familiar enough with the method of application of AED. Furthermore, 53 (62 %) respondents are not informed about the locations of AEDs in the Upper Savinja Valley, neither do they know whether the number of AEDs is sufficient. All the respondents also gave suggestions how to improve the knowledge about AED among the residents of the Upper Savinja Valley. Discussion: In the future, everyone should be effectively involved in the activities and efforts to prevent and reduce mortality of a sudden cardiac arrest. The person, who suddenly gets sick, needs to be treated holistically. He needs to get aid as soon as possible, wherein it is important to know the correct approach to a person who has experienced cardiac arrest. In the future, we must strive to increase the awareness and to educate people about locations of AEDs and of their proper and primarily safe use, since the best results can only be achieved with the proper approach.
