    Collecting Spatial Data
    Book Chapter

Spatial data occur in many fields such as agriculture, geology, environmental sciences, and economics (see Isaaks and Srivastava (1989) or Haining (1990)). They have been recorded and analyzed probably as early as men started to make maps, however the origins of their statistical analysis as we understand it today must probably be attributed to the work of Matheron (1963). Spatial data has the distinctive characteristic that, attached to every observation, we have a set of coordinates that identifies the (geographical) position of a respective data collection site.
