  • FAILURE TO SUPPORT

    Journal Article

The Russian invasion of Ukraine is the continuation of a war that has raged in the country since 2014. It is not the result of contemporary politics: it is the manifestation of long-standing designs on Ukraine as a territory and a misunderstanding of both the Ukrainian state and its peoples. Consequently, governments and institutions have been insufficient, if not outright hostile, to support for Ukraine’s efforts at repelling Russian forces beyond internationally-recognized borders. This article analyzes various kinds of (in)action from both other states and international organizations. First, the historical, sociocultural, and military origins of the war are explored. Next, an analysis of both states and international institutions is conducted, revealing the ulterior motives and underdeveloped rationales of these actors. Several cases of mistakes from international organizations are next presented. After, two positive examples of support for Ukraine are explored. Finally, a warning is made against placating Russian aggression and the need for deterrence against expansion in the future.
