The paper traces the influence of the Norwegian spelling reform launched in 1907 on the Norwegian written language in the US. The Norwegian immigrant community in America published a number of newspapers in their native language and the immigrant press became a significant part of the immigrants’ life in their new homeland. The changes and the development of their press reflect the gradual integration of Norwegians into American society in various areas. The research focuses on the linguistic level. For the purposes of the present paper, the newspaper Decorah-Posten (issues from the period 1935 — 1945) was chosen as the primary source material. Orthographic and grammatical usage in the Norwegian-American press is contrasted with the spelling codified in the 1907 spelling reform.
