  • Vloga infektologa v regijski bolnišnici = The role of infectious disease specialist in a regional hospital
Lešničar, Gorazd ; Reberšek Gorišek, Jelka
The very title of this paper indicates that the activity of an infectious disease specialist is very versatile. It is not limited solely to the inpatient and outpatient care of patients with ... infectious and febrile conditions, but it also includes consultations, particularly in the field of antibiotic prophylaxis and therapy, as well as in the choice of rational microbiological diagnostic procedures and control of intra-hospital infectionsat a hospital level. It also seems reasonable that an infectious disease specialist in the hospital should be appointed head of the Commission for Antibiotics and the Commission for intra-hospital infection control. Infectious disease specialist is also indispensable as a member of the hospital management teams, in the processes of education and research, as wellas in the cases of epidemics, natural disasters, wars and bioterrorism. Bythe appearance of new infectious diseases and the old ones that burst out innew forms, by the import of tropical diseases into our country, vaccination-related problems, and particularly by the occurrence of multiresistant strains of bacteria (MRSA), infectology has been regaining its importance. Therefore, infectious disease specialists have become indispensable in almost every branch of medical profession, and should thus bepresent in every Slovenia hospital. Only a uniform and balanced development of infectology with an adequate organizational and professional regional network and a development program that would include all the levels of health care activities in the field of infectology can ensure a quality and uniform control of infectious diseases in the country.
