  • Teaching mathematics through English using the CLIL approach

    The paper explores the efficiency of using the content and language integrated learning (CLIL) approach in teaching mathematics through English. The CLIL approach implies teaching a non-language ... subject, such as mathematics or geography, through the medium of a foreign language. The first part of the paper looks at the main principles and advantages of using CLIL in foreign language teaching. In the second part, we present the results of an experimental study conducted among primary school pupils (N=133) from three different schools in Slovenia. The study was aimed at establishing whether there are statistically significant differences between the control groups in which selected mathematical content was taught in Slovenian and the experimental group in which the instruction was delivered in English. The results of the post test showed that the control group scored better than the experimental group in all items tested and that there were statistically significant differences in two of the four tasks which were cognitively more demanding.
