  • Tradicionalna pustovanja v Sloveniji med lokalno, regionalno in nacionalno identiteto
    Židov, Nena
The author identifies the significance of traditional Shrovetide Carnival celebrations listed in the Register of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Slovenia in shaping local, regional and national ... identity. In many local communities the Carnival is one of the most important celebrations. Like many other annual customs, Carnival strengthens, reaffirms and renews local identity, since it represents one of the most important expressions of membership of the local community. Moreover, its annual nature helps establish a connection with previous generations. Since it is part of the "dowry" that younger generations receive from previous ones, there is a sense of obligation to continue it. The organisation and implementation of Carnival events is a time of close contact between local residents, while joint planning and implementation also has an influence on their mutual sense of connection. The local Carnival and displays of it elsewhere can have an important influence on the level of recognition of the local community. In some parts of Slovenia there are ways of celebrating Carnival, as well as figures and masks, which are characteristic of a number of places or a region. Thus, for instance, the figure of the kurent has greatly contributed to the profile of the Ptuj region. Among relatively similar Carnival groups characteristic of a particular region rivalry can arise regarding the "traditionalism" and "originality" of Carnival figures and other aspects. Of course, outsiders see them as a relatively homogenous whole that is part of the regional identity. Carnival figures appearing outside the local environment, especially abroad, represent not only their local community and region, but also Slovenia, and so they also become part of the national identity. With the use of traditional Carnival figures in completely new contexts, the question arises as to who "owns" Shrovetide heritage.
