  • Estimation of lower bound toughness in strength mis-match welded joints : 1999 Granjon Prize competition winner, Category C: Design and structural integrity
    Gubeljak, Nenad
Even in case of the same type of loading and at the same temperature, the strength mis-matching regions of weld metal exhibit different stable crack growth and large scatter of fracture toughness ... values. The scatter of fracture toughness values is significant when welded joint widths are changing and when a crack propagates through different microstructures with different mechanical properties. Therefore, in this paper the experimantally measured values of critical crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) using three point bend specimens have been classified according to microstructure regions of the welded joints. The effect of constraint due to the crack length and welded joint width was taken into account by using a proposed correction procedure for CTOD values. The fracture mechanics analysis has shown in that case that the sactter of experimentally measured critical CTOD value is significantly reduced. This has enabled reliable estimation of lower bound toughness of specified weld metal microstructures. The performed analysis has shown the lowest fracture toughness value in the narrowest region of welded joint, even in a case of material with sufficient impact toughness. Hence, the presence of cracks in the narrow root region of welded joint is detrimental for a welded structure service.
