    Titanium hydride powder was produced by ball milling titanium in hydrogen atmosphere down to micron sized particles. XPS of the TiHx powder was performed, however strong titanium oxide signal was ... also measured which decreased somewhat after intense sputtering of the sample but was impossible to get completely rid of. This was probably due to high surface / volume ratio of each TiH[sub]x particle which contributes to substantial titanium oxide / TiH[sub]x ratio and due to the surface morphology of the powder sample which leaves considerable part of the oxide layer shaded during the sputtering. AES was then employed and some characteristic differences in shape of Ti LMM spectra between TiH[sub]x and Ti were observed, however, it is not unambiguous whether they are due to TiH[sub]x or titanium oxide. Another XPS measurement was performed with TiH[sub]x powder and Ti powder of the same particle size. Peaks were fitted with oxide and metallic components and increased half-width of metallic component at TiH[sub]x (since hydride and metallic component are only 0.2 eV apart) checked for.
