  • Colour variation and use of steamed walnutwood (Juglans regia l.) for solid wood panel production
    Pervan, Stjepan, 1967- ...
Hydrothermal treatment of wood, especially steaming, is often used to achieve more intensive and homogenous colour of wood or to vary its hue. On walnutwood (Juglans regia L.) influence of steaming ... on colouring of wood was researched. Green, randomly selected walnutwood boards, 40 mm thick, were conventionally steamed in period of 16 hours, at temperature 70 to 90°C. Wood colour of heartwood and sapwood was assessed visually and with standard 3-stimulus colorimeter, using CIEL*a*b* system, and compared to natural colour of walnutwood. Heterogeneity of hues was found out on specimens at the end of hydrothermal treatment. The colour was compared to starting untreated colour of walnutwood. There was significant heterogeneity of hues found out on specimens during hydrothermal treatment, both sapwood and heartwood. Steamed walnutwood sapwood and heartwood significantly differentiated during the process, especially in lightness (L*) of wood colour. Finally the colour of steamed walnutwood was more or less uniform considering all of important colour characteristics. During the steaming process the sapwood has smaller declining trend of lightness, and in the same time heartwood has greater decreasing trend of lightness. The calculated covariance proved that during steaming process the lightness, chromaticity on blue - yellow axis and saturation of sapwood and heartwood are related to steaming time at constant temperature. Desired, referent colour of steamed walnutwood has the highest lightness and the highest chromaticity. Declining linear trend of lightness from sapwood over heartwood and steamed elements to referent specimens was confirmed
