  • Thickness swelling of the individual layers of a three layer particleboard

    Dimensional stability is a very important property of particleboards and is usually determined by 24-hour immersion in water. Because many particleboards are nowadays produced as three layer boards, ... and are now made from two surfacelayers and one core layer, is very important to know which layer contributes more to thickness swelling of the board. For the determination of the thickness of individual layers before and after immersion in water, a device for density distribution measurements was used. The concept of the device was based on the measurement of change of the intensity of gamma rays (Am-241) when they pass through the particleboard. From data obtained on this device the thickness of individual layers were calculated. It was found that the thickness swelling of the surface layer is greater, and contributes more to the total swelling than the core layer. Thickness swelling also depends on the thickness and density of the layer, on the amount of free space between particles and the amount of unrelieved compression stresses.
