    Gas-liquid flow plays an important role in many modern engineering systems due to its excellent heat and mass transfer features. To obtain a particular flow characteristic, such as void fraction, it ... is first necessary to discriminate between the two phases in the flow. For practical purposes, probes emitting two-state signals are used to detect local phase changes in the flow, and the probe signals are then interpreted to obtain the desired flow characteristic. Unfortunately, ideal phase discrimination is not possible because of difficulties in identifying the phase interface structures. Existing signal interpretation methods reconstruct two-state signal from a raw probe signal by static application of predefined threshold values to the probe signal. We have developed an alternative method for phase discrimination in the bubbly gas-liquid flow which is based on expert skill in probe signal interpretation. We describe the design, performance and possible extensions of the proposed method.
