Adaptive control constraint (ACC) of abrasive water jet (AWJ) cuttingJuriševič, Boštjan ; Junkar, MihaelIn this paper we present an alternative method for Adaptive Control Constraint (ACC) for Abrasive Water Jet (AWJ) cutting. Our objective is the detection of critical situations during the AWJ ... cutting. Our efforts were focused on the detection of abrasive jamming and mixing tube (AWJ nozzle) breakage. If one of this critical situations occur the cutting process must be stopped immediately to prevent waste of material and damaging of the machine. During the AWJ cutting the emitted sound represents a monitored attribute of the machining, which enables the detection of critical situations (abrasive jamming and mixing tube breakage) when they occur. We observed the Root Mean Square (RMS) value of the sound signal as a process control attribute. Several experiments confirm, that during the cutting process the level of RMS is constant and stable. In the case of critical situations the level of RMS drastically increases, what can be easily detected in real time. The benefits of such a system come out in case of long duration cutting without a need of an operator presence. Usually long duration cuttings correspond to larger workpiece thicknesses (up to 10mm) where the critical situation detection is facilitated due to the characteristics of emitted sound during the cutting process. The research and experiments were realized in collaboration and with a support of an AWJ machine manufacturer, which will install this ACC system in his AWJ machines.
