The aim of this research study is to examine relations between sex, social background, smooking and sport activities of school children aged 14. We questioned 141 boys and 141 girls aged 14 (pupils ... of the superior classes of the primary school). We used the questionnaire with 42 variables. All questions were "crossed" with the criterion variable "the average number of hours dedicated to sport activities per week, hours of gymnastics included". The analysis shows that 9% boys and 14% girls smoke. Those school boys and girls who do not smoke spend more time on sport activities. 47% boys qnd 24% girls who practice sport regularly devote to sport activities over 6 hours perweek. The principal reason why most school boys and girls practise sport activities and don't smoke is care for health, 85% parents of questioned school children recommend their children to take part in sport activities evenif themselves do not practise any posrt. Even the school - as an institution which does not tolerate smooking - is not successful in solving the problem of young pupil smoking. Forbidding children to smoke in school rooms they attain that the school children don't smoke at school but they do not change their smoking habits. Moreover, one third of the teachers of physical education smoke and they do not try to conceal it from pupils. There are even more smokers among coaches of sport institution. To diminish smoking habits among young people it would be necessary to organize sport and other activities which would offer better alternatives of how to spend the spare time than the existent ones.
