  • How do Slovene fourth grade primary schools students spend their summer holidays?
    Štihec, Jože ...
One of physical education's most important tasks is to teach children to spend their free time in a useful and healthy way. The aim of the research was to gather some information about the contents ... and forms of spending the free time during summer holidays. The study involved 345 ten to eleven years old fourth grade schoolboys chosen from fourteen primary schools in different parts of Slovenia. The sample covered all Slovenian regions. Schools took part in the research voluntarily. All and every included child had a written parents' consent for co-operation in the study. During their physical education classes chosen students filled up the questionnaire (questionnaire Strel, Stihec; 1991) about the way they spend their summer holidays. We were particularly interested in: what kind of sports the student is occupied with during the school year, is he a member of any sports society or a club, the time (lasting) of an active training, the kind of sports the student was occupied with during the summer holidays, frequency of taking part in sports activities during the summer holidays, if he has any friends who were engaged in sports during summer holidays, etc. The data were processed with statistical package SPSS for Windows (Frequencies). On the basis of the questionnaire we have received the following results: -Most of the fourth-graders did not yet affiliate to any sports society or a sports club. -Boys prefer team sports. -Most often boys participate in sports together with their friends, more seldom with their parents. The most favourable sports during the summer holidays areČ football, swimming, cycling, basketball and some new forms of sports activity that are becoming increasingly popular such as roller scatting, etc. The school will have to work out suitable programmes and by better organisation and wider choice of sports activities, should offer the children the healthy and reach way of spending their free time as well during the school year as in the summer holidays. Our results will help PE teacher to choose most favourable sports.
