Background. Immediate hypersensitivity to tree and weed pollens is one of the major causes of allergic diseases. We analysed frequency of various tree and weed pollen hypersensitivity and ... cross-reactivity among various pollens. Material and methods. Patients with allergic seasonal rhinitis sensitised to tree and weed pollens were included. Sensitisation was confirmed by skin pricktests using standard and extended panells of tree and weed pollen allergens. Results. In the group of 32 patients with positive skin prick test for tree pollens the most frequent sensitisations were to white beech (26 patients), hazel (25 patients), birch (24 patients) and beech (23 patients). The most frequent cross-reactivities were between hazel and white beech (24 out of 26 patients), between birch and alder (20 out of 24 patients) and between beech and oak (17 out of 23 patients). In the group of 43 patients sensitised to weed pollens the most frequent sensitisations were to plantain (29 patients), marguerite, artemisia and sorrel (22 patients each). Conclusions. Additionally to birch and hazel in our region also white beech and alder sensitisation are frequent. In weed pollen allergy sensitisation to plantain, marguerite, artemisia and sorrel dominate. As is shown in our study also sensitisation to less known tree and weed pollens should be considered asthe cause of allergic rhinoconjunctivitis.
