  • Monitoring the internal oxidation in rapidly solidified copper
    Rudolf, Rebeka ...
On the case of copper we present a special kind of internal oxidation phenomenon that can take place in pure metals containing a high concentration of defects, particularly thermodynamically ... stabilized vacancy clusters. The process starts with the dissolution of oxygen into the pure metal at the free surfaces, and continues with the diffusion of oxygen atoms into the metal matrix volume, where they are trapped at numerous defects in the crystal lattice. The increasing oxygen activity at these places causes local oxidation of the matrix and, consequently, precipitation of fine oxide particles. The results of experimental studies, and the monitoring of internal oxidation in rapidly solidified pure copper confirmed the formation of a microstructure consisting of continuous three-dimensional copper matrix and homogeneous finely-dispersed submicron Cu2O particles. These particles precipitated simultaneously throughout the entire volume of the Cu-matrix and no precipitation front appeared in the microstructure during the experiments. The volume fraction of the precipitated oxides depends on the starting microstructure of the Cu matrix, and on the temperature and time of the internal oxidation process. About 2 vol. % of oxide particles have been obtained with the proposed manufacturing technique.
