Methods ... in results. In theyears 1996 to 1998 we have observed 6544 cases of acute enterocolitis. 58% of all reported cases remained etiologically unexplained. Between etiologically explained cases, Salmonella spp. was presented in 9%, rotavirus in 8%, Campylobacter spp. in 7%, Cryptosporidium spp. in 5%. Viral agents, Lamblia, Escherichia coli, Shigella are found infrequently. Presence of Yersiniae, Staphylococcus aureus or Clostridium perfringens was infrequent. Even more exceptionally we have found Clostridium difficile and Clostridium botulinum. Imported cases of intestinal infections were seen frequently from all over the world, first at all from developingcountries. Typhoid fever was imported and a case of botulisms, too. Conclusions. Developed laboratory techniques and surveillance of infectious diseases contributed to recognition of many different causes of intestinal infections in Slovenia. To preserved diagnostics as a bases for prevention of intestinal infections and additional epidemiological research was suggested.
