  • Impairment of executive functions in alcoholics with suicide attempt

    Objectives: Previous research has found that recently detoxicated alcoholics show impairments in executive cognitive functions, supporting the frontal lobehypothesis. These impairments are similar to ... those seen in individuals with suicidal behavior. The study was testing the hypothesis that alcoholics with a history of suicide attempt, compared to alcoholics without a history ofsuicide attempt, will show greater impairments in cognitive flexibility, planning, problem solving, ability to learn and information processing speed.Method: Performance of three groups of participants (alcoholics (N = 40)with or without a history of suicide attempt and controls (N = 40)) was compared using three neuropsychological tests (Stroop color and word test, Tower of London, Wisconsin card sorting test) sensitive to executive cognitivefunctions. Results: The alcoholics, compared to controls, were foundto be impaired in almost every executive cognitive function measured. Compared to controls, they showed impairments in cognitive flexibility, information processing speed, planning and problem solving. No significant differences were found regarding ability to learn. Even though this is still an ongoing study result gathered so far implicate decline on measures of planning and problem solving in alcoholics with suicide attempt. Conclusion: Present findings are consistent with the results of previous studies that revealed significantly impaired executive functioning in alcoholics. Results suggest cognitive decline in alcoholics with suicide attempt. This we have to bear in mind when planning appropriate treatment and prevention strategies, asearly recognition of neuropsychological impairment is cruical in preventing irreversible neuropathological brain changes due to lethal effects of alcohol.
