The paper treats and explains several questions related to the role of mezzo-management in the development of a company and in the reorganization of a trade organization. The questions are tightly ...interconnected and together with theoretical starting points they form a complete whole. Data, obtained on the basis of replies given in a survey questionnaire, explain the relation of mezzo-management to leadership and management of companies, to staff motivation, to research and development work, to companies, their environment and market orientation. It separately explains the role of mezzo-management in the performance of its work functions. The paper defines the meaning, contents, tasks, and role of the management, especially at the mezzo-level. With an analysis of the situation in the concerned trade organization and with a study of the professional base of the organization and personnel management science, the paper sets the starting points for a new organizational structure of the organization in which also the mezzo-management tasks are defined anew. A survey with a questionnaire was used as a help in defining the tasks and planning the new organization. The survey was carried out on a sample which was representational enough to enable a generalization of its results for the trading activity in Slovenia and to make corresponding conclusions. The majority of those who gave replies to the questionnaire agreed that the managing staff properly delegates to their subordinate and that competent staff have the possibilities for education and promotion. All of them are also aware of the meaning of market, competition, quality, and advanced technologies in performance of their work. They are sure that only the mastering of the market ensures prospects and existence. The paper gives reply to a number of questions, but at the same time it leaves an even greater number of them open, thus indicating the needs for further research and for future directives in the field of the development of trade, its restructuring and role in the economy of the Republic of Slovenia.
