For the planning, development, and evaluation of activities regarding drugs and addiction and in connection with multidisciplinary collaboration on different levels, we need general and specific ...information about the patterns and trends connected with the problem of drug abuse as well as about importantregional differences within the country. A specialized epidemiology for drugs and addiction has become a necessary support for the collaboration of different sectors in planning and decision making aswell as for the multidisciplined policies regarding health, and the prevention of the consequences of the great deal of psychoactive substance use in the population. It is essential to gather information from a variety of sources and to use different methods and indicators which are described in this article (e.g. The First Treatment Demand, cross-sectional research, research on groups at a higher risk, ethnographic research, data regarding the overdoseof drugs, mortality related to drugs, infections through drug injections, statistics on the issuing of prescriptions, police arrests, the number of drug confiscations, the amount of confiscated drugs, the cost and purity of drugs, judicial statistics on imprisoned persons, etc). The Institute for Health Protection of the Republic of Slovenia together with the Co-ordination Center for the Prevention and Treatment of Dependence on IllegalDrugs, which operates underthe auspices of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Slovenia, has already developed an information system regarding judicial proceedings involved with drug users ("Record on the Proceedings of Drug Users").
