    Background. The article describes the importance of healthy teeth and stomatognathic system (occlusion) for its function and well-being of man. Missing teeth can be replaced, disturbed occlusal ... functions can be reestablished by the prosthetic means, all contribute to patient well-being. Prosthetic treatment could have harmful effects locally and on body as a whole. Conclusions. Described are some harmful effects of prosthetic treatmentwhich could be iatrogenic due to style of treatment or allergic, irritative, toxic because of dental material's and host's nature. The role of prosthodontic treatment for the quality of life of elderly is emphasized, as part of the geriatric dentistry. Described is also the role of prosthetic treatment of patients with psychosomatic eating disorders and of patients withgastrointestinal diseases.
