    Lejko-Zupanc, Tatjana
Staphylococci are among the most important human pathogens. They cause a number of community and hospital acquired infections ranging from asymptomaticcarriage to severe sepsis that can lead to the ... patient's death. The article describes the clinical picture of staphylococcal infections. Staphylococcal sepsis is the most severe form of staphylococcal infection. Theoverall mortality rate due to staphylococcal sepsis at the Department of Infectious Diseases, Ljubljana Medical Center in the years 1997-2000 was 37%. Coagulase negative staphylococci are important nosocomial pathogens and are the main contributing factor to excess morbidity and mortality in patients following major surgery.
