  • Pregled uspešnosti ponovnih operacij zaradi suma recidiva hernije medvretenčne ploščice ledvene hrbtenice = Success of reoperations following recurrent lumbar disc herniation
Kovač, Simon, 1969- ; Fonda, Silvester
Background. Operative treatment of the lumbar disc herniation is routine procedure nowadays. Unfortunately, it is not always successful. Operations dueto recurrent disc herniation are quite common. ... The aim of our study was to evaluate results of the operations due to recurrent disc herniation. Methods. Patients who underwent reoperation due to recurrent disc herniation between January 90 and January 98 were avaluated retrospectively. Patients were regularly examined by orthopedic surgeon and were additionally interviewed to access further data. They were evaluated according to Ebelings score system. Results. Forty-three patients were reoperated due to recurrent disc herniation. There were 15 females and 28 males. Average follow up period was 4.1 years. Nine patients (21%) had excellent result, 12 patients (28%) good, 13 satisfactory (30%), 4 fair (9%), 5 poor (12%). According to Ebelings score,79% of patients had successful reoperation. Conclusions. We should be aware that criterions for evaluation of the patient with operated recurrent disc herniation are quite low. Successful reoperation does not mean, that patient is symptomless. Patients with recurrent disc herniation should be treated like those with primary disc herniation. In the absence bowel and bladder dysfunction and /or progressive neurologic deficits conservative care is indicated firstly. They reoperation should be done only if the patient elects to proceed with operation after failure of the conservative care.
