  • EDI and CAD data exchange for the construction industry
    Vovk-Avšič, Mira
Computer Aided Design (CAD) is one important component of Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) which attempts to bring to the construction industry for design, drawing production and project ... administration the benefit and ease of "paperless trading". The construction industry recognizes a need for many different forms of information exchange and an increasing number of standards worldwide support information transfer. Virtually all of these result from CAD concepts but refer to the broader defienition of information. A format for information transfer is not a problem, but a successful information transfer may not be so easy. Current information transfer and exchange uses file formats which are developed for CAD data exchange. This paper presents a technical discussion of the predominant formats with a brief examination of their advantages and disadvantages.A CAD data exchange prototype using EDI technology is proposed. To assure acceptance management, or systems development personnel, must realize a need for improved technology. Here is an example of a successful project that attempts to identify problems and builds ystems to solve those problems
