  • Zobozdravstvena prosvetljenost udeležencev šole za starše = Dental health knowledge of expectant parents
Kosem, Rok, 1965- ; Košir, Narcisa
Background: The oral health of children is influenced by their parents' knowledge of dental prevention. Dental health education is important already in the prenatal period. A questionnaire-based ... survey was conducted in a group of expectant parents with the aims to evaluate the subjects' knowledge about dental health, identify possible factors that might influence this knowledge, and assess the benefit derived from a one-hour lecture on the maintenance of oral health. Subjects and methods: Questionnaire 1, consisting of eight multiple-choice questions on gingival bleeding, dental plaque, oral hygiene inchildren, infant nutrition, fluorides, first visit to the dentist, oral hygiene devices and cariogenic foods, was administered to 807 expectant parents (553 women and 254 men) who gathered to attend a lecture on the maintenance of oral health, offered as part of a parenting class. Questionnaire 2, containing six questions from Questionnaire 1 and two additional questions about sweet drinks and oral habits, was completed by 575 expectant parents (413 women and 162 men) seven to 14 days after the lecture. Results. In Questionnaire 1, the percentage of correct answers to individual questions ranged between 46.8 and 99.8%, with the exception of the question onperiodontal health, which was answered correctly by only 37.8% of respondents. In Questionnaire 2, the rate of correct answers to individual questions was between 62.1 and 96.9%. Besides the lecture, none of the factorsevaluated in the study appeared to have a significant influence on the subjects' knowledge of oral health. Conclusion: The study participants displayed a comparatively high, though uneven, level of knowledge about various topics relevant to oral health. Their knowledge increased significantly after dental health education provided in the form of a one-hourlecture. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters).
