  • Rezultati zdravljenja karcinoma ustne votline z radikalnim ali pooperacijskim obsevanjem na Onkološkem inštitutu v Ljubljani = Results of treatment of oral cavity carcinoma with radical or postopertaive radiotherapy at the Institute of oncology in Ljubljana
Petrič, Primož ; Budihna, Marjan ; Šmid, Alojz, 1941-
According to reports from literature, the results of radiotherapy for stage I and II oral cavity carcinoma are equal to those of surgical treatment. Patients with an advanced disease benefit most ... from a combination of surgery and irradiation. Two-hundred and thirty-five patients treated with curative intent at the Ljubljana Institute of Oncology between 1990 and 1995 were included in our retrospective study. Ninety-three patients were treated with irradiation with radical intent and 142 patients with postoperative irradiation. Regardless of the treatment approach, the results were better in patients with early primary tumours, clinically non-palpable nodes and early disease stages (p < 0.05). In patients with T1 or T2 tumours, local control after combined treatment was better than after irradiation (p < 0.05). On the other hand, in node-free patients and in patients with disease stages I or II,no statistically significant differences were detected between the two therapeutic approaches concerning regional disease control and survival (overall and disease-free), respectively. In patients with T3 or T4 tumours, involved neck lymph nodes or disease stages III or IV, the results of combinedtreatment were superior to those of irradiation with radical intent (p< 0.05).
