  • Spremembe na skupni vratni arteriji po kombiniranem zdravljenju karcinomov glave in vratu = Changes in the common carotid artery following combined treatment of the head and neck carcinomas
    Zakotnik, Branko ...
OBJECTIVE: Ultrasonography of the common carotid artery following surgery of head and neck carcinoma and combined adjuvant treatment with radio- and chemotherapy was performed with the aim of finding ... out whether arterial wall injuries are more acute in patients treated with combined adjuvant radio- and chemotherapy (mitomycin C and bleomycin) (Group B) than in those treated with adjuvant radiotherapy alone (Group A). PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 62 patients, 28 in Group A and 34 in Group B, were examined with ultrasound. The patients underwent ultrasonography of both common carotid arteries (ACC), which was performed bilaterally on three sites of longitudinal and transverse sections of ACC. The examinations included measurements of the thickness of tunica intima and media of ACC performed bilaterally. The measurement results for Groups A and B were compared. RESULTS: The mean age at diagnosis for patients from Groups A and B was 52 and 51 years, respectively. No statistically significant differences were observed between the two groups in terms of changes found in the arteries with respect to the patients' sex, their smoking habits, blood pressure, cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. There was also no difference between the two groups in tumour localizations and delivered doses. In Group A, the mean thickness of the tunica intima and media on the right of the neck was 0.83 mm (range 0.5-2.0 mm), and in Group B it was 0.86 mm (range 0.4-2.5 mm) (p=0.78). In Group A, the mean thickness of the tunica intima and media on the left of the neck was 1.20 mm (range 0.5-2.5mm), and in group B it was 0.92 mm (range 0.6-1.8 mm) (p = 0.28). No statistically significant difference was found between Groups A and B in the thickness of the tunica intima and media (on the right 0.83 mm vs. 0.86 mm, p =0.78; on the left 1.20 mm vs. 0.92mm, p=0.28).
