  • The history of Czech economic and political alignment viewed as transition

    The paper aims to describe how a change in the external align nent of a small nation is linked with its existence as an economic and social entity. The international Cooperation and partnership is ... viewed as a macro-political phenomenon which has far-reaching consequences for the functioning of all remaining segments of the society. An attempt is made to show that current thetransitions in post-Communist Europe are not such a unique phenomenon in human history as is often presumed. Through the case of Czechoslovakia, it is demonstrated that in this century there have been several occasions when the social and economic shake-up was not dissimilar to the recent painful developments. These events happened when the whole economic set-up was influenced by deep structural and political changes, as occurred in 1918, 1929, 1939, 1945, 1948 and 1990.
