  • Bo skrb za starost ženskega spola? = Will elder care be female?
    Dragoš, Srečo
Background. While we know that old age influences social networks, we are not fully aware of the fact that it is also influenced by them. Different social networks which the elderly use produce ... different social ties having different effects on the health of the elderly. Results. Research shows that the numher of social ties available to the elderly influences their aging and levels of basic physical fitness, both of women and men although in different degrees; it shows correlation between the cardiovascular mortality of the elderly and their loss of their partners; it shows that their material conditions influence the degree of their use of network potentials; it shows that different kinds of resources of social interactions have different effects on mental health of the elderly; and other correlations. The inclusion of dogs into institutional care for elderlv patients is an example of how completely new, important but as yet unexploited resources of social contacts can easily be activated. This innovation calls attention to the importance of the distinction between caregiving and the activation of care resources in social networks, where different combinations can bring about different effects. Finally, the text brings into focus the importance of network analysis for social policy, especially in the field of elder care, where the state and its relation to informal social networks can direct elder care system towards completely different models. Conclusions. Care for population category of elderly depends more on social than on economic capital available in society. Social capital is a product of social networks, so it is of key importance what kinds of networks function in different categories of the elderly. Social(together with aging) policy of the state and local authorities can regulate social networks and social capital in different directions.
