    In the year 2003 at the Department of Paediatric Surgery and Intensive Care inthe University Medical Centre of Ljubljana we treated 706 chil dren with signs of intraabdominal disease, 459 of these ... were operated. Appendicitis is the most common abdominal condition requiring surgery in children (1,2). 93 children were operated for acute appendicitis, in 5 (5,4%) we found only mesenterial lymphadenitis, whereas in 10 (10.7%) we found peritonitis with a perforation of the appendix. The diagnosis of acute appendicitis was based on history, clinical signs and laboratory signs of infection. We performed sonography in cases where the clinical signs were not clear, where the historywas not indicative or the children had other concommitant diseases. We also perform sonography in research groups. The most common programmed operation were operations of inguinal hernia , which we did in 240 cases and 20 cases in which the hernia was incarcerated. We have also analysed all the other operations in this year.
