  • Ocena hrapavosti dentina po brušenju z različnimi polirnimi instrumenti = Evaluation of dentinal surface roughness after treatment with different polishing instruments
    Kopač, Igor
Background: Modern clinical principles of tooh preparation for fixed prosthodontic treatment include polishing of rough surfaces. Polishing of coarse ground tooth substance substantially improves the ... fit of the crown to the abutment tooth. It is especially important to polish the irregular preparation margin. Materials and methods: From the labial surfaces of extracted maxillary central incisors, square pieces were cut out, grinded to aflat surface using a rough torpedo-shaped diamond bur, and then polished using three different burs: diamond polishing bur, EVA system and carbide polishing bur. Profilometry was used to determine surface roughness. Scanning electron microscopy was used for imaging cut surfaces. Results: Carbide bur created much smoother dentinal surfaces than the other two polishing instruments. All three instruments produced significantly smoother dentinal surfaces compared to surfaces created by initial grinding. Conclusion: The study justifies the need for polishing cut dentinal surfaces. The choice of the polishing system depends on the luting agent used for cementing, as well as on the presence of intact teeth next to the prepared tooth, on the precision of clinical work, and on the clinicians experience with the polishing instrument.
