    Jelen, Barbara, zobozdravnica ...
Background: The aim of the study was to examine the relationship between the duration of breastfeeding and the prevalence of sucking habits and malocclusion in children. The results were to be used ... in planning a preventivedental education programme for parents. Subjects and methods: A total of 362 children (179 boys and 177 girls) aged 3 to 4 years participated in the study. Functional and morphological signs of malocclusion were assessedduring clinical examination. Data on the duration of breastfeeding andpacifier, digit or nursingbottle sucking were provided by the parents. Results: Sucking habits and malocclusion were significantly more common in children who had been breastfed for a shorter period of time (p<0.001). Conclusions: Prolonged breastfeeding of infants helps prevent the development of sucking habits and promotes normal development of the orofacial region. Mothers should be encouraged to breast-feed their babies for at least 7 months.
