  • Kortikosteroidi pri zdravljenju astme = Corticosteroid therapy in children with asthma

    Asthma is the most common chronic disease in childhood. Inhaled corticosteroids are at present the most effective long-term therapy available for suppressing airway inflammation. The prevalence of ... asthma in children varies from 5 to 30 percent in different populations. Data available from the epidemiological study in 2000 show that the prevalence of asthma in Slovenia is 13.9 percent. Although inhaled corticosteroids control asthma symptoms, reduce the frequency of acute exacerbations, improve lung function and bronchial hyperresponsiveness, they may have side effects on growth, function of the adrenal gland and bone mineral density. The article discusses differentinhaled corticosteroids, their pharmacokinetic profiles, mode of action and side effects.
