    Based on selected examples of speech practices (code-switching) and language ideologies in the urban area of the linguistically, culturally and ethnically heterogeneous region of Slovene Istria, ... Slovenia, the author attempts to present and elucidate the sociolinguistic strategies that speakers of different cultural and ethnic background, aged from 15 to 86 years, use situationally and ideologically in order to maintain or blur socio-cultural boundaries. By doing this, they are involved in practices of identity construction. The author focuses on language ideologies as field of inquiry and as a theoretical and analytical tool with which she explores the speaker's metapragmatic awareness and - mainly ideologically induced - language use.
