  • Kaj starši menijo o uporabi sistemov za razvrščanje otrok s cerebralno paralizo na osnovi funkcijskih sposobnosti in zanesljivost med ocenjevalci = Parents' opinion on the use of classification systems based on functional abilities in children with cerebral palsy, and their inter-rater reliability

Taking into account the importance of classification, we have decided to implement classification based on functional motor abilities: the Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) and the ... Manual Ability Classification System (MACS). The aim of the study was to find out how parents felt about using GMFCS and MACS and whether they agreed on benefits of using both with experts. We also wanted to check the inter-rater reliability. Twenty-three parents of children with CP were invited to participate in the study. The parents answered some questions of possible benefits of using the GMFCS and MACS. A vast majority agreed that classification of children with CP did assist to a great extent with realistic goal setting, intervention planning, aids prescription, understanding of child's needs and prognosis. Only 13% to 21.7% felt that classification might have helped to a small extent. Only 8.7% of parents felt that it was very difficult to classify their child using the GMFCS (9.1% for MACS). Sixty-six percent felt that decision was difficult to a moderate extent and the rest of them found it easy (for both systems). High inter-rater reliability scores (kappa for GMFCS was 0.78 and 0.63 for MACS) indicated that parents knew their children well and were reliable in using both classification systems. Besides, the parents recognized the benefits of MACS and GMFCS which we find important to know. These findings agree with the premises of a family-centred service concept. Based on that, we can further develop the collaborative partnership with parents and help them to make decisions in the process of (re)habilitation.
