  • Sodobna ultrazvočna klasifikacija aterosklerotičnih leh v karotidnih arterijah = Modern ultrasound classification of atherosclerotic plaques in the carotid arteries
    Žvan, Bojana
In Slovenia the annual incidence of stroke is about 600 per 100,000 people. The most common cause of stroke in the elderly is atherosclerosis. Atherosclerotic plaques in the carotid arteries vary in ... composition, surface shape, movement and embolic potential. With time, the size, composition and surface of plaques may change. The risk of an ischaemic event (IE) does not depend only on the degree of carotid artery stenosis, but also on plaque characteristics. With unstable plaques the risk for an IE is 7 - 8 times higher than with stable plaques. Ultrasonography has become the method of choice for assessing carotid artery plaque type, size, localization and dynamics because of its non-invasiveness, reproducibility and widespread use. An international agreement on the contemporary ultasonographic characterization of carotid artery plaques was reached in 1996. Plaques were classified into five types according to echogenicity (from echolucent to hyperechogenic), composition (homogeneous to heterogeneous), surface (smooth, rough, ulcerated), and movement. Standards have been set for optimal ultrasonographic plaque assessment.
