    Although detailed diagnostic criteria exist, the differential diagnosis between schizophrenia (SCH) and delusional disorder (DD) is sometimes difficult. This is particularly true for patients with ... first episode of the disorder. To find out the differences between patients with SCH and DD some sociodemographic and morbid charaderistics were compared. Data from the Slovenian Registry of hospitalised psychiatric patients were used. In 1994 there were 855 admissions due to SCH and 379 due to DD to the Department of Psychiatry in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Patients with SCH were younger than patients with DD, they were also more frequently single and retired and their length of stay was significantly longer. The two groups did not differ in place of residence or estimated success of treatment. The results may indicatea more severe course of the disorder in patients with SCH but social influences on the diagnosis of SCH should be considered as well.
