    The objective of the present study is to establish the current situation in the field of use of animals in experiments in the Republic of Slovenia. On thebasis of a questionnaire we gathered data on ... the quantity and species of animals and the purpose of their use in experiments in the period from 1992 to1996. In view of the purpose, we presented the use of animals in the basic biological research, the applicability studies, the testing of products for the protection of man, animals or environment, school education and practice, the forensics and diagnostics of diseases. The decrease in the number of animals, used in experiments, was established on the basis of the trend which is annually decreasing by 1,378 animals and which is almost significant trend from the statistical point of view (P = 0.0729). By the comparison of the total of the animals, used in 1992 in Slovenia, and in some European countriesin 1992 or 1991, and the number of population and the GDP per capita,we established that the number of animals, used in experiments, per 100,000 of population in the Republic of Slovenia was 1.89, which is much lessthan in the majority of the European countries.
