  • Review of Randall Curren : Aristotle on the necessity of public education
    Feinberg, Walter
Drawing on Aristotle, Randall Curren provide a rich interpretive argument advancing the case for public education. The gist of it is that there are a number of social goods that can be promoted best ... through education. These include mutual good will and trust, civic friendship, reasonableness and a sense of equality that cannot be obtained through separate schooling or through a system that given parents incentives to opt out of the common school. This review argues that Curren is essentially correct on all of these points. However, the reviewer is less certain that Aristotle's conception of reason is the best means for supporting his conclusions.
