  • Public education and the demands of fidelity to reason : a response to Dwyer, Feinberg, Hourdakis, Pendlebury, Robertson, Strike, and White
    Curren, Randall R.
This paper develops responses to the seven review essays of Aristotle on the Necessity of Public Education that appeared in this volume. It clarifies the aims and scope of the book, as well as the ... ethical foundations of Aristotle's educational and political views, his notions of reason, rationality, reasoned persuasion, and rational consent, and the conclusions about public education and school choice reached in the book. It responds at lenght to objections bearing on the book's central argument, and briefly explores the implications of this argument for educational equality in some non-standard cases that are not addressed in the book. It concludes with some remarks about the conception of public education suggested by Aristotle's most compelling arguments, and the different functions of "aims" talk in educational philosophy.
