    Background. Suden transitory loss of consciousness or syncope frightens the patient and his relatives, and for physician it is a difficult diagnostic task. Causes of syncope are numerous. The most ... critically important causes arecardiac or cardiovascular, however the most frequent are reflex. The third large group consists of patient with unexplained cause of syncope, largely dueto unreliable diagnostic methods. Conclusions. The aim of this review is toexplain: the causes of syncope, the clinical characteristics of patients with syncope and how to plan the diagnostic procedures. In particular, we shall concentrate on clinically important cardiac syncope.
