  • Phase change materials in teaching physics [Elektronski vir]

    The largest share of households' energy consumption presents heating and cooling of houses to maintain certain thermal comfort. Therefore, it is of importance to optimize the thermal balance of ... buildings. One possibility is using phase change materials (PCMs) to decrease room temperature oscillation. PCMs accumulate or release the latent heat accompanying the phase transition. Given the growing energy requirements, it is sensible to address the topic of PCMs in schools within the science subject. In this contribution, we first present the basic properties of PCMs and requirements for their use as heat and cooling storage in different applications. With a focus on introducing PCMs in teaching Physics, we present the basics of PCMs thermodynamics. Based on the analysis of the high school Physics curriculum, we propose how to implement PCMs in the physics classroom.
