    The article stresses the importance of the translator's awareness of nonverbal elements in plays. Since they represent an extremely rich source of additional meaning, these elements should receive as ... much attention by the translator as the verbal elements. On the basis of Fernando Poyatos' theory of nonverbal communication, the author ilustrates how noverbal elements are decoded in a source text and encoded in the target text. Examples are taken from Harold Pinter's play Homecoming. She finds out that the translator was unaware of the special role of nonverbal elements in the original and, as a consequence, he reduced the interpretative possibilities behind the psychological reactions of the dramatic characters and narrowed the absurdist openness of the play
