    The title of this PhD dissertation is Ice Hockey as a Cultural Symbol in Canadian Prose (Hokej na ledu kot kulturni simbol v kanadski prozi). It is a critical examination of short stories and novels ... in which hockey plays a prominent role. Because ice hockey is such a dominant cultural phenomenon in Canadian culture, it is not possible to read hockey literature without considering the broader culture of hockey. Hockey exists in many forms in Canada, which range from a played game, to a simple marker of national identity, to a fruitful topic for literary discourse. This background informs hockey literature, but at the same time, hockey literature forces the reader to examine the often mythologized and naturalized culture of hockey in Canada. The dissertation is broken down into six main body chapters, examining the following: 1) the history of hockey as a symbol in Canada, as well as an explanation of the cultural factors that aided hockey in its rise to a national symbol; 2) an introduction to the utopian scholarly theories of play that support the generally idealized culture of hockey in Canada, as well as an examination of how this is thematized in hockey literature; 3) a lengthy consideration of the problem of violence in hockey, including aspects such as the denial of violence on the ice, the justification for violence in hockey, as well as the repercussions of celebrating a 'violent game' as a national symbol; 4) literary manifestations of hockey as a mythologized, and typically Canadian, symbol; 5) hockey as a family sport that sometimes supports family bonding and unity, and sometimes destroys the same; 6) the question of hockey as a national art form in the traditional sense. The dissertation is thematic in nature, which means that very often the literary world of created, represented hockey crosses with the more tangible world of played, spectated hockey. Thus, reading hockey fiction invites us to reconsider the importance and status of hockey as a national symbol.
