    Jesenšek, Marko
Hell in Prežih's sketch Solzice (Lilies of the Valley) is presented in a twofold manner: as (1) "an ugly, dark gorge" in the end of the family field (Hell) and as (2) an allegory of the conquered ... fear and Prežih's advice that during the teaching of the basic Christian truths within the family and in church the intimidating explanations of hell (without a capital H) should be avoided. In the imagination of a six-year-old child, Hell "in the end of the family field" is depicted in a distorted grotesque manner by means of colours (i. e. dark) and sounds (i. e. dreadful echo), personifications (i. e. the noise / ... / was beating / ... / and amassing in the gorge) and wordplay (i. e. there are no devils in this hell). The association with the real hell is also present in Prežih's imagery, which, in a contextual manner, functions as the association of the gorge and Hell with the real hell and the devil in it (the child's idea of Hell in Mihelič's illustration of the 1949 first edition of Lilies of the Valley corresponds to this image). In the Freising Manuscripts the devil, fiend, Satan, demon is referred to as Unkind, ("Because with the envy of the Unkind he was banished from the grace of the Lord"). Prežih depicts vividly how he saw Hell as a child, presents the gorge as unkind and toys with the idea that true hell is the home of the Unkined, i. e. the devil, Satan. In the second half an interesting motive of the journey to hell and back appears, announcing the catharsis achieved through the allegory of the descent into darkness and the victorious return to the light, which overcomes sin (the lie in the first part of the sketeh) and personifies the good in people (in Lovro's case, the love for his mother), Mother, as a symbol of love, "stands in the middle of this light" and is presented with a wonderful comparison: she is "marvellously beautiful and radiant, like an apparition from heaven".
