  • Modalpartikeln und Natürlichkeitstheorie
    Petrič, Teodor
This article concentrates on two linguistic problems: 1. on reinterpretation processes of indexial elements, namely of German modal particles, and 2. on the question if sentences containing modal ... particles can be viewed as strengthened constructions. With regard to the first main theme of this article, our hypothesis was based on those of Hentschel (1986), Abraham (1988,1990,1991) and Leiss (1992). The meaning of indexical elements, more specifically of the German particles, can be shifted into the illocutive sphere if there are feature conflicts between linguistic levels. If the highest levels, viz. the speech act level and the level of propositional attitudes (ʹSatzmodusʹ), are not in conflict, the modalisation of particles, so it seems, is not triggered. Feature conflicts on lower levels could be an essential prerequisite, yet might not be sufficient to prompt the reinterpretation of an indexical element. Concerning the second question the article deals with, our analysiswas based on the following hypothesis: From a synchronic point of view, clauses with modal particles are strengthened constructions. The corresponding non-strengthened constructions are clauses without modal particles (compare German So ist das eben im Leben. orSlovene Tako je pač v življenju. vs. Tako je v življenju.). The following facts would support our hypothesis: 1. A clause with a modal particle is less economical. 2. A clause with a modal particle is more specific in meaning. 3. From the speaker's point of view, a clause with a modal particle is less economical to produce. 4. From the hearer's point of view, a clause with a modal particle is easier to decode. From our initial hypothesis we derived a number of theoretical predictions, which were tested and evaluated statistically. The statistical results were interpreted as follows: German sentences containing modal particles are strengthened constructions with regard to their denotative meaning. This implies the loss of markedness on the morphosyntactic level, andthe increase of markedness in the illocutive sphere
