Midwifery education is very demanding considering the professional competencies student midwives are required to develop. It can cause different levels of stress to students and affect their learning ...abilities. With the JDCS (Job Demands-Control-Social support) model adapted for educational purposes we aimed to estimate the midwifery students' coping abilities with study related stress.
A quantitative study was conducted using a questionnaire that evaluated perceived demand (9 items), perceived control (10 items), and perceived social support (10 items) with a 5-point Likert scale. 94 students were invited to participate in the study in autumn 2014. All necessary steps to address the ethical issues of the study were undertaken beforehand.
One quarter of Slovenian midwifery students perceived midwifery education as too demanding, while 31% of them thought it was low-strained. 41% answered that the study motivated them. 28% believed that they lacked the possibility to make their own decisions regarding the study.
The findings indicate that the level of Slovenian midwifery students' well-being is generally high. Using the JDCS model in midwifery education, we could evaluate students' general coping abilities with study related stress. More studies should be performed to evaluate the research tool internationally.
Nursing clinical learning environments are particularly important for the achievement of good practice in clinical training of student nurses, and thus, for the nursing competence development. Hence, ...it is important to have an instrument consisting of reliable and valid criteria for assessing the clinical learning environment, applicable in different contexts, and translated in the respondents mother tongue. The goal of the present research was to test the reliability and validity of the Slovenian version of the “Clinical Learning Environment, Supervision and Nurse Teacher evaluation scale”, and to compare it with the Croatian version. The data was collected between 10 March and 10 June 2015 at four Slovenian institutions, where nursing BSc study programmes are performed. The final sample consisted of 232 students (response rate 68.8%): 81.9% were females and 18.1% males, average age was 23. The translated instrument in Slovenian language resulted as reliable and valid, it reflects the expected five factors of the original version despite some minor problems in the factor structure and in test-retest. The most important difference between the Slovenian and Croatian version is in the factor structure regarding the implementation of roles in clinical learning environment.
•CLES+T was translated in Slovenian language and validated.•The Slovenian version reflects the expected five factors of the original version.•Three differences were identified between the Slovenian and the Croatian versions in the factor structure.•Some suggestions to improve the use of CLES+T are provided.
The evaluation of e-learning and conventional pedagogical activities in nursing programmes has focused either on a single pedagogical activity or the entire curriculum, and only on students' or ...teachers' perspective. The goal of this study was to design and test a novel approach for evaluation of e-learning and conventional pedagogical activities that considers students', teachers' and managers' perspectives. A case study of the proposed approach was performed at a publicly funded nursing faculty with Slovenian and Italian students from 2009 to 2012. The case study was combined with focus group discussions, interviews, direct observation and survey. The proposed approach allows management to compare the value of different pedagogical activities through the students', teachers' and managers' perspectives. The approach proved useful in the evaluation of pedagogical activities and provided valid arguments for long-term pedagogical process improvement.
The students' assessment of clinical faculty competencies and the faculty members' self-assessment can provide important information about nursing clinical education. The aim of this study was to ...identify the differences between the students' assessment of the clinical faculty member's competencies and the faculty member's self-assessment. These differences can reveal interesting insights relevant for improving clinical practice.

The field of IT processes lacks a scientifically-based tool that constructs organisation-specific IT processes according to the organisation’s socio-technical characteristics.
In this paper we ...propose a solution to this problem in the form of IT process engineering (ITPE). ITPE is based on established method engineering principles which we have adapted to IT process construction.
The tool was demonstrated by having three organisations use ITPE to each construct two IT processes.
ITPE provided useful guidance in all three cases.
The study demonstrates that method engineering principles can be applied in research fields other than information system development.
Although previously the Job-Demand–Control–Support model has been successfully applied in many studies in the field of health care and education, the model was never used for the evaluation of the ...nursing students' well-being.
The aim of this study was to promote nursing students' well-being. The objective was to verify whether the Job-Demand–Control–Support model is appropriate for the evaluation of their well-being.
The Job-Demand–Control–Support model was implemented and investigated in a multiple-case study, which consisted of two phases. In phase I the students' well-being along with the perceived levels of control, support, and demand for each individual student during their study were identified. These results were used in phase II, where the usefulness of the presented model was evaluated.
The study was performed at the end of the academic year 2009/2010 in two institutions: Tampere University of Applied Sciences, School of Health Care, Finland (institution 1); and the University of Primorska, Faculty of Health Sciences, Slovenia (institution 2).
Participants of the study were nursing graduates who finished their studies in 2009/2010 and the Vice-Deans for education of both institutions. The final sample included 83 students in institution 1 and 79 students in institution 2.
The case study was combined with a survey (phase I) and an interview (phase II).
Although the students' well-being in these two institutions was different, most students of both institutions perceived their studies as low strain, placid, and only some of the students in both institutions had a high risk of malaise. The Vice-Deans for education of both institutions confirmed that the application of the Job-Demand–Control–Support model provided relevant information on the nursing students' well-being, which helped in planning improved nursing study programmes.
This study demonstrated that the Job-Demand–Control–Support model is appropriate for estimating undergraduate nursing students' well-being.
Clinical practice is essential to nursing education as it provides experience with patients and work environments that prepare students for future work as nurses. The aim of this study was to ...translate the “Clinical Learning Environment, Supervision and Nurse Teacher” questionnaire in Croatian language and test its validity and reliability in practice. The study was performed at the Faculty of medicine, Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek, Croatia in April 2014. The translated questionnaire was submitted to 136 nursing students: 20 males and 116 females. Our results reflected a slightly different factor structure, consisting of four factors. All translated items of the original constructs “Supervisory relationship”, “Role of nurse teacher” and “Leadership style of the ward manager” loaded on factor 1. Items of “Pedagogical atmosphere on the ward” are distributed on two factors (3 and 4). The items of “Premises of nursing on the ward” loaded on factor 2. Three items were identified as problematic and iteratively removed from the analysis. The translated version of the aforementioned questionnaire has properties suitable for the evaluation of clinical practice for nursing students within a Croatian context and reflects the specifics of the nursing clinical education in this country.
•CLES + T questionnaire was translated in Croatian language and validated.•Translated CLES + T reflects the specifics of nursing clinical education in Croatia.•It consists of 4 factors instead of 5 reported in other studies.•It reflects the multiplicity of roles performed by the mentors in Croatia.
